Natural coral bridge collapses in Aruba 9/2/2005Tourism Minister Edison Briesen. The cause was not immediately known, he said. “It’s a very sad day for Aruba and for its tourism,” Briesen said. “A picture of the bridge appears in almost every promotional flier, and more tourists visit it than any other attraction.”

I have issues with the country of Aruba and the government regarding the Natalee Hollaway case. I personally dont want any of my tourism dollars going to Aruba until the Aruban government stops the legal roadblocks and cooperates with the U.S. in investigating this case.

    Just my .02

We do, very briefly, discuss that incident in the next episode. While this is a tragic situation for all involved, it does appear to be an isolated incident, much like the well publicized incident onboard an RCI ship a couple years ago. Yet I am still answering questions about “going overboard” while on the ship. The “boycott” of Aruba seems to have not garnered any steam; the down swing in tourism in 2005-6 is more likely caused by increased fuel cost and an active hurricane season. Aruba, like all the Dutch islands, has legalized prostitution (see the story about the victims of this sewing their mouths shut in protest) that would be the only reason I would boycott an island not an isolated incident that could have happened anywhere. We and our more active guest, make every effort to “tell it like it is” so that or listeners are prepared and informed when they go on a RCI cruise, if that is good, bad or ugly.

    Thanks for your thoughts Bob.

During our visit to Aruba, we went to the Renassance (sp?) resort and purchased day passes to their private island. It was WONDERFUL! We would highly recommend it if your looking for a wonderful beach experience with very little crowds and wonderful hammocks to slumber in during an afternoon. We also visited the Flying Fish Bone Restaurant in the evening (ship left port after midnight) and would echo the comments of your guest – it is a special place for a wonderful meal on the beach with the waves lapping at your feet. They actually provide sandal holders at each table! We visited after the Holloway incident and it was almost like it did not occur – our taxi-cab driver said there is virually no crime on the island. When we questioned about Ms. Holloway, he said it was a tragedy and unfortunate but asked how many other experiences had you ever heard of from Aruba (unlike Jamaica).
